Sandra Suubi Nakitto; A Young Musician With A Passion To Share.

By Arthur M. Katabalwa

Airtel Uganda in partnership with Trace, an international music video channel has recently  launched a new music competition called ‘Airtel Trace Music Star’. The music competition is mainly for Airtel subscribers to achieve their dreams of becoming the next big music star in the country and the continent at large.

Budding music star Sandra Nakitto, 24, has been taking the competition by storm. I first heard of her incredible vocals at a function she sang at celebrating her grandparents 60th wedding anniversary. She seemed to glide through the notes effortlessly but with such a strong presence of voice that I was sure that one day she will be gracing probably larger and more grand audiences.

I recently caught up with Ms. Nakitto when I heard that she was in this competition and true to form my suspicions from weeks ago were not without fruit.  Sandra comes from a solid Christian background which she says has helped her to remain grounded. I did not loose the fact that whenever she speaks of her accomplishments she thanks God whom she says has been her guiding light. She started singing earlier on and through all the time, the family has been strong in their support. "My family has strongly supported me through my music" she admits.  Most of her extended family are also musicians of varying degrees. An Uncle, Mr. Charles Mwesigwa a Houston resident is a renown choirmaster of incredible vigor and presence.

Her Christian faith and her talent has seen her singing to audiences at Watoto Church (formerly KPC) where she wowed the crowds at the Cantanta/ the Christmas carols. The power and inspiration to sing with such a great voice she says is something not that abstract. "For me it is the passion to share and the incomprehensible power of possibility that comes with it."

As the voting stands, Sandra has had a lot of interest in her and she has got many people voting for her. "My wish is that more and more people come out to vote for me at this late stage. We will be heading for the semi finals soon and now the competition has heated up more than ever."

During the launch of the competion at Airtels' headquaters in Kampala, the  Managing Director  Mr. Tom Gutjahr said “Many times, people want to participate in singing competitions but lack the confidence to stand in front of a crowd and sing.”  The heat is on for this young lady and she seems to be taking it all in her stride.
